Chapter 8
Jack stewed in silence as he walked Harley around the block to the small park. The late afternoon breeze blew over his face, and he stood for a moment breathing it in. He needed to cool his temper down, losing it would do nothing to gain Roseâs confidence. But when heâd seen the deep indentation of the ink on her foot heâd wanted to rip someoneâs head off, preferably the bitch thatâd kidnapped her.
His mind had constantly gone over yesterday when she had put herself at risk by following a car she knew nothing about, and not satisfied with giving him a cardiac arrest, sheâd used a fucking Taser. She could have gotten herself killed. It was quite possible that she had made things a lot worse by taking the young girl. The person sheâd used the Taser on was most likely used to coerce the young girls and then kidnap them.
His eyes crunched shut, the burning behind them was anger at the thought of anyone touching or hurting Rose. His heart punched against his ribs. This was what it was like to worry about someoneâ¦to care.
He really didnât know her at all. What lengths had Rose gone to in order to survive? Her instincts for survival were admirable.
He looked down at Harley who sat waiting for Jack to throw his ball. Taking it from his drooling mouth, he hurled it. The power driven muscles that the dog had was proof of the lengths Rose had gone to train him and herself.
She was a black belt in taekwondo, extremely fit, and he had no doubt that she would put up one hell of a fight if needed. However, if there had been more than one of them she would have been in trouble, and he might not have gotten to her before theyâd taken her as well.
Heâd left her chatting with Daisy, because he couldnât stand to listen anymore. Micah had been on the phone talking to their business partner Kent.
âSo this is where you got to,â Micah said, walking up to stand beside him.
âNeeded to clear my head.â
Micah was silent, and Harley came back, panting. The dog sat in front of Jack, waiting for him to take the drool covered ball. His long, bushy tail was swishing from side to side on the grass. Micah bent down, taking the ball from his mouth, and took a long swing back, throwing it further than Jack could ever do.
âYouâve still got a great right swing,â Jack commented.
âYes, those were the daysâbeer, baseball, and women, in that order.â
Jack laughed. âIn that order? Really? Because I remember it being slightly different.â Before Daisy, when theyâd been young bucks, it had been a different life that theyâd enjoyed.
Micah grinned. âOkay then, women, baseball, and drink.â
Jack chuckled. âThatâs more like it.â He frowned. âBut youâre happy now?â
âHappier than Iâve ever been. Meeting Daisy was the best thing that ever happened to me.â
âYou were always fucking lucky with the good looking women.â He laughed.
âRose is
